AUNTS
www.myspace.com/aunts
aunts.here@gmail.com

AUNTS is about having dance happen. The dance you've already seen,
that pops into your head, that is known and expected and unknown and
unexpected. Dance that seeps into the cracks of street lights, subway
commotion, magazine myth, drunk nights at the bar, the family album,
and the couch where you lay and softly glance at the afternoon light
coming in through the window. AUNTS constantly tests a model of
producing dance/performance/parties. A model that supports the
development of current, present, and contemporary dancing. A model
that expects to be adopted, adapted, replicated, and perpetuated by
any person who would like to use it. Where performing can last five
seconds or five hours; never a "work in progress." Where the work of
performing is backed by the "land of plenty" rather than "there is not
enough." Where the work of AUNTS defies the regulation of
institution, capitalism, and consumerism. AUNTS is about being
gracious in this world. Thank you.

AUNTS was started by Rebecca Brooks and Jamm Leary.

Past Shows

AUNTS Fall Bashes

Description: The first set of performance parties produced, AUNTS Fall
Bashes were "throw everything in the pot" type of shows. The basic
idea was to have an overstimulation of performance, where during the
show the audience was free to watch what grabbed their attention,
leave what bored them, find another performance to watch, socialize
with other audience members and/or performers, listen to music. It
was about intensifying both the role of the performer and the audience
rather than trying to "blur the line" or follow the typical dance
performance model of audience sit down and performer dance.

BULL YARD BASH

Description: When the curators of the MR Festival 2005 asked us to
organize a panel on the future of dance, we immediately decided to
create a performance situation. In our capacity as AUNTS, we had just
barely started producing events: free performance parties
incorporating elements of rock shows, art shows, and social dancing.
As we started planning for the Bull Yard Bash, we attended a panel
held at DTW focusing on the absurd in dance. We were both bored and a
little appalled. It was a typical panel, with panelists sitting in a
straight line, getting cut off by the next question from the
moderators, checking off a list of prepared questions. The entire
thing ended right when it got going.

The kickoff for the BULL YARD BASH was one question: What is your
grandiose vision for the future of dance? We wanted people to be able
to think of the biggest thing they could for dance in the future.
Really think BIG. The panelists were chosen with the idea of 'grandma
takes the kids to the opera'. A world of no parents, lots of love and
treats. The panelists chosen were in the earlier stages of dance
careers, coupled with some wise sages of the small world of dance,
with a few smart and interested outsiders thrown in.

We thoroughly interviewed every single panelist beforehand to start
them thinking about what they had to say about their own grandiose
vision. Subsequently, we did not have to moderate the panel in any
traditional sense of the word. It was an uninterrupted discussion on
possibilities for dance in the future. The panelists dressed up, sat
in a circle, drank wine, spoke up, and screamed at each other.
Performances took place peripherally during the discussion, and then
the performers joined the conversation. DJ Ingie Pop subtly played
with the varying tones of voice and then kicked ass in the rockin
dance party that finished off the evening.

December 18, 2005 at Chashama through the Movement Research Open Festival (NYC).

Panelists: Luciana Achugar, Neal Beasley, Eliza Axelson-Chidsey,
Felicia Ballos, Nancy Forshaw-Clapp

Keithley, Phyllis Lamhut, Isabel Lewis, Daniel Linehan, Sara Marcus,
Janet Panetta, Michael Portnoy, Becky Serrell, Lise Serrell, Ede

Dj: Inge Pop

AUNTS Late Show

Description: AUNTS Late Show was a Saturday Night Live – Pina Baush -
Conan O'Brien dance party. We had a resident dance team that was
directed by a different dance captain each show, two dance guests,
conversationalists whose topics included akward conversation, new
music trends with , and the idealism of 1960's Washington with former
CIA members. Late show was the beginning of the Free Bar/Free Boutique
idea, where admission to the show was a donation to the Free Boutique
such as drawings, clothes, DVDs, books or donation to the Free Bar,
concluding in free shopping at the boutique and free drinks from the
bar during the show. This idea was to foster a non monetary exchange
between dancers, their friends, their fans, people that came to see
the shows. Isabel Lewis now wears Janet Panetta old hoodie. Each show
culminated in "social dancing," a dance party for dancers and everyone
else to boogie down to awesome new music. Dancers, dancing all the
time, have little time to go out and just dance with eachother without
being in rehearsal or class.
